Olympic minister Hugh Robertson: it is necessary to have a universal law related to sentencing of athletes that use steroids

Officials of the British government will be not capable to stop athletes importing steroids to the UK, when they come to take part in the 2012 Summer Olympics. Although intake of steroids is prohibited in sports, personal administration of these products is not illegal in the UK. Just sale of steroids is considered to be illegal in this country. So, if a person attempts to import quantity of anabolic steroids that is essentially large, he/she will not be permitted to do it.
Before Olympics took place in Australia, Canada and China, governments of these countries changed legislation connected with import and administration of steroids at least temporally. But the British government doesn’t agree to change steroid laws for the 2012 Olympics.
Ironically, while the government of the UK doesn’t want to make personal administration of steroids illegal, Britain athletes are banned for lifetime, if they take anabolic steroids. As for the WADA Code, sportspeople that administer forbidden medications are banned for 2 years.
The Olympic minister Hugh Robertson claims that it is needed to have a universal law related to sentencing. This minister insists on at least four years or even longer.  While he is supported by the British Olympic Association, the UK Anti-Doping Agency doesn’t support such harsh sanction. The CEO of the UK Anti-Doping Agency Andi Parkinson claims that some sanctions must be softened.
The Olympic minister acknowledges that there are various points of view in sports and it’s not well but he doesn’t ask the CEO of the UKAD to resign.
The spokesman for the minister has claimed that any athlete can have steroids in his/her luggage, when he/she arrives to London. But the amount of steroids must demonstrate that he/she has them only for personal administration. The spokesperson has added that it is not illegal for a sportsperson to use steroids under laws of the UK but if any sportsperson is caught using banned products, he/she will be punished under anti-doping laws.
The UKAD noticed that they would cooperate with border control officers. Information about sportspersons will be utilized by anti-doping officers.
5, 000 drug test, including 1, 000 blood tests will be conducted by the International Olympic Committee.
