Georges Laraque wrote his autobiography in a book “The story of the NHL’s unlikeliest tough guy”. The author wanted to share his biography with others. Georges Laraque mentioned also about intake of anabolic steroids in the National Hockey League (NHL). These aspects about steroids use by the NHL’s players seemed to be quite interesting. The Canadian press published only the quotes linked with this endless subject. The rest of the book was ignored.
Georges Laraque said in an interview that he had never administrated performance-enhancing drugs. Furthermore, he pointed out that he hadn’t mentioned any names of the players that had used steroids. The book is indeed about life of the author.
The author mentions about several ways in order to determine whether a hockey player takes steroids and other performance-enhancing drugs or not. Here are 2 ways noticed by him:
1. A hockey player whose weight has been increased by more than 40 pounds in a short period of time must be utilizing performance-enhancing drugs.
2. A hockey player whose weight has been reduced significantly in short period of time to correspond to the indications of the Winter Olympics must be administrating performance-enhancing drugs.
Of course, all sportsmen, including hockey players, know that they will be tested for steroids and other performance-enhancing drugs by the World Anti-Doping Agency. That’s why they cease administrating the banned products certain time before the Olympics. It helps them to prevent risk of testing positive for these medications.
But this is not the main idea of the book. George Laraque wanted to show that a child is required to put incredible efforts to become a famous professional sportsman in spite of racial intolerance and reviling. But the press is not interested in this aspect. The press wants to publish stories related to administration of steroids by famous sportsmen.
The auhor did not have a goal to to make public the names of the hockey players who administrated steroids.
Of course, the media asks the author to mention the names of the NHL’s players that use steroids.
